I always get a ton of questions about how to get rid of stomach fat. With so many products and supplements these days that promise to get rid of stomach fat, it is hard to know what to believe.
To address the issue, I've made this FAQ to answer a few of the most common questions:
Q: "How many situps/crunches should I do to get rid of stomach fat?"
A: A common misconception is that doing a lot of situps and crunches will help you lose belly fat. This is dead wrong! You cannot spot-reduce fat in particular areas of your body. Instead, your body loses fat in all areas when you do any fat-burning exercise.
The best way to get rid of stomach fat is to establish a good diet, a consistent cardiovascular exercise routine, and a weight training routine. Train your abs 2-3 times per week to build your abdominal muscles, and as you lose fat through cardio and diet you will start to see your "six pack."
Q: "What are the best foods to eat to get rid of stomach fat?"
A: While some studies have shown that certain foods (dairy for example) can help target stomach fat loss, it is best to just stick to a lifetime nutritional program consisting of the best general fat-burning foods.
Good protein sources include tuna fish and other fishes, skinless chicken breast, egg whites, nonfat cottage cheese, whey protein powder, nonfat milk, and others.
Good sources of carbohydrates include oatmeal, brown rice, beans, fruits, vegetables, 100% whole-wheat bread, among many others.
Healthy fats are also important. A tablespoon of flax seed oil, olive oil, or fat found in salmon provide you with essential fats. Other healthy fats include nuts, peanut butter (in moderation), and the small amounts of fats found in the proteins and carbs mentioned above.
These foods mentioned either have a thermic (metabolism-boosting) effect on the body, or digest slowly...both of which are great fat-burning qualities. Eat a portion of lean protein, carbs, and healthy fats every 2-3 hours for maximum fat-loss effect.
Q: "I have lost a lot of fat, but I still have a layer of fat on my stomach. Why? And how do I get rid of it?"
A: Our genetics play a huge role in determining where our bodies store fat. For some, it can be very hard to get rid of stomach fat that is stubborn because their genetics code for a large amount of fat cells in the stomach area.
Fortunately, you can get rid of it!
If you are at a plateau and it seems like you cannot get rid of your stomach fat, first analyze your diet. Are you eating strictly enough? Make sure you avoid eating too many "cheat meals" per week and eat more of the lean proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that I mentioned.
Secondly, make sure you are being consistent with your cardiovascular exercise. If you need to break a plateau, increase your cardio intensity, duration, or frequency until you break through.
Just remember that anyone can get rid of stomach fat. It just takes the proper nutrition, consistent cardiovascular activity, training with weights, and sheer motivation! Good luck!
